Summary

Michigan's outdoor and hunting traditions and its ingrained independent culture is represented in state laws regarding firearms, knives and other weapons. This session will discuss Michigan laws surrounding weapons and reasonable strategies for weapons policies, including the 3d printing of "ghost guns."

Description

How do the Michigan laws regarding weapons affect Michigan Public Libraries? How can a library comply with applicable laws and still maintain a safe public space and a safe workplace? This session will discuss various Michigan and Federal weapons laws and how those laws impact public library operations and policies.

Participants will be able to:

  • Identify Michigan State and Federal laws concerning firearms, knives, and other potentially harmful and regulated items that may come into the library.
  • Determine how certain laws can provide a framework for reasonable weapons policies.
  • Identify the differences between weapons policies for patrons and employee weapons policies.
