In the pandemic, many libraries took advantage of Controlled Digital Lending (CDL) through the Hathi-Trust Emergency Temporary Access Service. CDL is based on an extension of the right of first sale combined with fair use principles.
This webinar will provide the basics of CDL, how the Hathi-Trust ETAS utilized CDL during the pandemic and how many libraries have built their own version of CDL, including the University of Illinois, post-pandemic.

Instructor: Sara Benson is the Copyright Librarian and an Associate Professor in the Scholarly Communication and Publishing Unit at the University of Illinois Library. She is also affiliated with the Center for Global Studies and the European Union Center at the University of Illinois. She holds a JD from the University of Houston Law Center, an LLM from Boalt Hall School of Law at Berkeley, and an MSLIS from the School of Information Science at the University of Illinois.
