As the governing body of a public library, library trustees often have to handle situations involving personnel, public finance, politics, and other issues that could have significant consequences if dealt with incorrectly. This session will delve into board responsibilities and limits with respect to governing these situations, and a trustee's relationship and responsibility towards the Director, staff, the friends' group, their municipality and their fellow board members.
Participants in this session will be able to:
1) Discuss the primary sources of library funding in Michigan.
2) Identify a library board's role in issues such as intellectual freedom.
3) Determine appropriate roles and duties for board officers.
