Artificial Intelligence in the Library with Lauren Hays

Artificial intelligence (AI) is all around us. It is in our cars, phones, and homes. AI is also in our libraries. In order to make wise decisions, it is important that we understand where AI is already being used in our library’s databases and computer programs. This understanding can then lead to proactive discussions about where AI should be used and where concerns exist.

This presentation will include information about the current state of AI in libraries, future areas of growth in AI in libraries, and a discussion of ethical issues surrounding the use of AI.

As a result of this program:

• Attendees will be able to identify where artificial intelligence is currently being used in libraries.
• Attendees will be able to discuss areas of excitement and concern with the use of artificial intelligence in libraries.
• Attendees will be able to describe the future of artificial intelligence in libraries.

Instructor: Lauren Hays, PhD, is the instructional and research librarian at MidAmerica Nazarene University in Olathe, KS where she enjoys teaching and being a member of her institution’s Faculty Development Committee. She has co-presented at the annual conference for the International Society for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning and was the 2017 speaker on SoTL for the Association of College and Research Libraries’ Student Learning and Information Literacy Committee’s Midwinter Discussion.

Her professional interests include SoTL, teaching, information literacy, educational technology, library and information science education, teacher identity, and academic development. On a personal note, she loves dogs, traveling, and home.
