Everyone likes a good story and librarians are no exception. This webinar will explore the ways in which you as a trainer can take advantage of a narrative framework to increase information retention and learner engagement. We will discuss what elements make a story compelling and examine how we can apply those concepts to make your training memorable.

Once upon a time in land near a salty sea, Patrick Hoecherl, a coordinator of staff development sat in his glass tower at the Salt Lake City Public Library. A dark presence, tedium, had permeated the training landscape. Was there a hero who could be called upon to deliver the system from the rising darkness?

Everyone likes a good story and librarians are no exception. This webinar will explore the ways in which you as a trainer can take advantage of a narrative framework to increase information retention and learner engagement. We will discuss what elements make a story compelling and examine how we can apply those concepts to make your training memorable. The webinar will include practical examples so you will know how and in what situations to apply the concepts.

By the end of this session, you will know:

  • how adding stories to your training can increase knowledge retention
  • how using stories increases participation and completion rate
  • how you can add storytelling elements into your own training sessions and what these storytelling elements look like in the context of a training
  • where to find basic resources for use when designing your own training sessions

Instructor: For the past 6 years Patrick Hoecherl has been the chief learning wizard (Staff Development Coordinator) for the Salt Lake City Public Library. He spent several years questing as a knight of the round table (ALA LearnRT Board Member-at-Large, ULA Programming Chair, ULA Public Section Chair) and enjoys falconry (parakeets) in his spare time. Patrick is passionate about making the alchemical process of staff development as fun and painless as possible.

PCI Webinars are recorded and available to members of the Michigan library community in the Library of Michigan's Niche Staff Skills Academy about a week after they air. New webinars will be in the New category for several weeks. You do not need to register for a webinar in order to view it later in the Staff Skills Academy.
