Summary

Libraries and schools in Michigan and across the country are being targeted by groups challenging books and materials that discuss subjects as diverse as "Teen Legal Rights," and "Me and Earl and the Dying Girl." Many challenged titles are ones involving LBGTQ+ themes. This session will discuss intellectual freedom in libraries, and how libraries can prepare for a materials challenge. Deborah Caldwell-Stone from the American Library Association, Office of Intellectual Freedom, will be presenting the session.

Description

Materials challenges and incidents of attempted censorship have greatly increased across the country last year, with the ALA Office of Intellectual Freedom, as well as the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund and the National Coalition Against Censorship all facing exponential increases in requests for assistance in matters relating to complaints about school and public library books and programs. This session will discuss materials challenges and how libraries can prepare and respond .  Deborah Caldwell-Stone from the American Library Association, Office of Intellectual Freedom, will be presenting the session.

At the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Define Intellectual Freedom in the context of Public Libraries
  • Identify the components of a good reconsideration policy
  • Describe tips and steps for addressing challenges at their library
