Summary

All Michigan public libraries have the ability to contract with municipalities for service. This session will discuss the process of contracting for service, and possible options for receiving appropriate compensation for services provided.

Description

A service contract is a great way for libraries to serve neighboring communities. However, such a contract can result in pitfalls for the library if the terms of the contract don't reflect the culture of the existing patrons. This is especially true if the contracted area is not paying the same rate for services that the "home" community is paying via a millage. This session will discuss considerations and tips for negotiating reasonable contracts for service with municipalities.

Participants in this webinar will be able to:

  • Identify municipalities near them that are available for contracting
  • Describe the basic parts of a valid contract
  • Recognize problems that can occur in library contracting situations
  • Identify strategies to avoid common problems with library service contracts
