Many adults approach technology classes convinced they’re “just bad at tech,” making confidence, not skill, the biggest barrier to learning. This hands-on session shares simple teaching strategies, supportive language, and practical demonstrations library staff can use immediately to reduce tech anxiety and build trust. Attendees will leave with concrete tools for helping hesitant learners gain confidence, feel successful, and keep coming back for help.

As a result of this program, attendees will:

  • Apply simple, proven teaching strategies to reduce tech anxiety and build confidence in hesitant adult learners
  • Use supportive, approachable language that fosters trust and encourages continued engagement
  • Implement practical, hands-on techniques that help learners experience quick wins and feel successful immediately

Instructor: Steve Alcalde is Head of Computers and Technology at Rogers Memorial Library in Southampton, New York. With over a decade in public libraries, he specializes in technology services, digital literacy, and innovative public access, helping staff and patrons confidently engage with emerging technologies. A frequent presenter at local and national conferences, Steve shares practical, approachable strategies on emerging tech, makerspaces, and library infrastructure, with a focus on building staff confidence and strengthening community service.
